The storm ponds at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Oshawa campus were seen as an opportunity to marry contemporary design with ecologically progressive water treatment systems. They are the point at which the rectilinear, urban built form of the campus blends with the ravine topography of the adjacent creek and woodlands, and offer restful lookout spots, dramatic views and recreational trails.
DTAH constructed a system of weir walls and scuppers to hold up the flow of water as it filters into the forebay and holding ponds, thus making the design legible even in dry weather. In wet weather, those students who brave the elements will be treated to the sight of rainwater cascading into the pool from the surrounding parking lots. The two storm ponds at UOIT are the final sculptural element in a complete and cohesive strategy for managing rainwater run-off from the built campus back to its natural source in the ravine.
